10 resources parents can go to improve their parenting

Family

If you're a parent, you've probably spent countless hours worrying about whether or not you're a good parent. Some parents spent hours looking up resources so that they can improve their parenting skills. Luckily there are many wonderful resources parents can turn to in order to help them navigate the sometimes difficult world of parenting. One of the best resources is turning to family members who have also been parents. If you have a good relationship with your parents, siblings, or extended family, you might want to think about asking them for parenting advice. Sometimes they can end up helping you more than any book or internet website.

Friends

Additionally, friends who are also parents are a great resource. Sometimes it's nice to get advice that doesn't come from your family. Friends can provide different resources and they may know about community or government resources that you haven't heard of. Your friends might also have a great tip or suggestion regarding parenting that you hadn't considered. Maybe one of them has children older than yours and will be able to assure you that whatever your child is going through is only a temporary phase. Not only are friends a good place to go for resources, but they'll help your sanity.

Support Groups

Most people think that support groups are for people who have issues with addiction or who are trying to recover from a disease or the loss of a loved one. However, more and more support groups are popping up for all sorts of topics. There are many support groups for parents aimed at trying to figure out the best parenting methods. These types of groups could provide valuable resources because the members will include people who aren't involved in your everyday life. And like using your friends for resources, support groups may have members who know about resources or parenting sites or books that you may find useful.

Government Websites

The United States government has a website that offers links to several sites aimed at helping parents or guardians raising children. Some of the sites are about funding education, some about health issues, and some are about what new and expecting parents can expect. Government websites can provide a wealth of important information. Hospitals and Doctors

Your doctor or the pregnancy ward at your local hospital will most likely have valuable information regarding parenting skills. Hospitals and doctor's offices almost always have brochures about parenting. If you don't find the type of information that you're looking for, they probably know where you can find it. Sometimes hospitals and doctors can provide helpful health or psychological information to help you become a better parent, especially when it's information you might not have received otherwise.

Internet Forums

The internet is a vast place and if you know what to search for, you can find almost anything. There are forums and message boards dedicated to almost any topic you can think of. A lot of new and experienced parents find comfort in reaching out online to discuss their concerns about parenting. This is especially helpful for people who don't have local resources. Internet forums can help parents get advice from other parents - and best of all, if it's deemed necessary, they can hide behind the cloak of anonymity to avoid any embarrassment.

Parenting Books

A simple search on Google or Amazon will show you just how many parenting books have been written. Many of these authors are parents, doctors, educators, or researchers specializing in child development and behavior. While not all parenting books will be helpful, it could be a good idea to consult some, especially if there are certain parenting issues that you're worried about.

Schools

A lot of preschools, kindergartens, elementary, middle, and high schools have teachers or guidance counselors who are available to discuss issues with parents. Understandably, some parents might be hesitant to discuss their parenting problems with school counselors, but it's good to know that these options are available to you.

Parenting Classes

Some people may balk at the idea of attending a parenting class. But there are plenty of people who are worried that they don't have the right parenting skills. Some people are worried that they're handling certain parenting issues in the wrong manner. And some people have never had children before and want to learn everything they can. Parenting classes can be a useful resource for both new and experienced parents. They can help with understanding what resources are available to you, how to deal with a child's behavioral issues, or just give you a comfortable space to learn about different parenting methods.

Blogs and Websites

There are so many websites and blogs out there dedicated to different parenting styles or problems. Do you worry that you're not encouraging your child enough? There's probably a blog about that. Worried about your child's learning abilities? There are websites about that. A lot of parenting blogs and websites can help you learn new parenting skills.
